Cross Connection

Protecting Your Drinking Water

Cross-Connection Control Program

Our water system is committed to providing safe, clean drinking water to everyone we serve. One way we do this is through our Cross-Connection Control Program, which helps prevent contaminants from entering the public water system.

What Is a Cross‑Connection?

A cross‑connection is any actual or potential connection between the drinking water system and a source of contamination or pollution. Backflow can occur due to changes in water pressure, allowing contaminants to enter the drinking water system. Properly installed and maintained backflow prevention assemblies (BPAs) protect your household and the entire community.

How We Prevent Backflow

Some properties are required to install a backflow prevention device. These devices keep water flowing in the correct direction and protect the public water system.

Testing Requirements

Backflow prevention devices must be:

  • Tested when installed
  • Tested annually
  • Tested after any repair or relocation

Testing must be done by a State-certified backflow tester approved by the SWRCB, and test results must be submitted to BBPUD by December 31.

Property Owner Responsibilities

Property owners are responsible for:

  • Installing required backflow prevention devices
  • Paying for testing and maintenance
  • Submitting annual test reports on time
  • Keeping devices accessible and in good condition
